Bow ties and smiles

A life without accessories is incomplete. And like it or not, a bow tie is one of the season’s hottest accessories. It’s so much hotter since we started to recognise it as a unisex trend. It can transform a simple corporate look into a compliment magnet. I’m crazy about how it can take you from the office and land you at an award show with ease.

Banded bow ties are especially wonderful because they’re easy to wear compared to traditional ones that our fathers would wear. That’s a plus if you’re like me and can’t make a tie to save your life. Two-tone bow ties are my favourite. I rocked a black and white one here. With the right ensemble, polka dots and pinstripe bow ties are a great option too. Play around with different fabrics and pops of colour if you dare to unleash your inner style diva.

I paired a black peplum pencil skirt with a white button-up shirt with a bow tie with both colours. For this look, I shot my fashion arrow past singer Janelle Monae; who in my mind doesn’t exist without a bow tie. Local beauty Noni Gasa has also worn this look well. But to me, this is Janelle’s signature look – a closet-worthy one at that.

See pictures below. And yes, there are no smiles…The irony!
